Where is this construction project located?
This project is located on US-59 Southwest Freeway between downtown and Loop 610. Click here to see a map showing the project location.    Back to Index

What is being rebuilt and how much will it cost?
Reconstruction will include approximately 1.75 miles of US-59 between Mandell and Spur 527 as well as Spur 527. The section between Mandell and Montrose will be converted from an elevated freeway to a below grade freeway with arched bridges constructed at Graustark and Montrose. The cost of the project is approximately $71.1 million.    Back to Index

How many lanes will US-59 have after the construction project is completed?
US-59 will be expanded from the original 10 lanes, five in each direction, to a total of 12 lanes. The new section will provide five lanes in each direction as well as a two-lane barrier-separated HOV facility. The HOV facility will connect from US-59 onto Spur 527.    Back to Index

When will this project be completed?
The reconstruction of US-59 at Spur 527 should be completed around September 2006. The contractor will receive bonuses up to 3.5 million for early completion or will pay penalties for late completion.    Back to Index

Why was Phase 2 of the project, which involves the closure of the inbound Spur 527 lanes, delayed from March 2003 until February 2004?
The start of Phase 2 was postponed at the request of Houston's mayor until after the 2004 Super Bowl.    Back to Index

US-59 is currently elevated over Montrose Boulevard, but will be reconstructed below ground level. How will Montrose Boulevard be affected?
Montrose Boulevard will remain open during the entire construction process. The street will remain at grade while US-59 is converted from an elevated freeway to a below grade freeway. Two arched bridges will be constructed to carry Montrose traffic, one bridge for each direction of travel.    Back to Index

What alternate routes to downtown will be available when the NB Spur 527 lanes are closed?
Alternate routes include Beltway 8 to SH 288 for traffic outside the Beltway, Loop 610 to SH 288 for traffic between the Beltway and Loop, and the Main Street, W. Gray/Pierce Street, and Polk Street exits for traffic inside the Loop. Click here to see a map of alternate routes for traffic using the Main Street exit ramp. Alternatives include taking the Garrott Street U-turn to the NB Spur 527 frontage road, turning left on Main Street, or turning left on San Jacinto. The Main Street ramp will also serve medical center traffic via Fannin Street.    Back to Index
